Disability and the Law

This is a course that analyzes the relationship between disability and the law, with an emphasis on federal and state statutes and case law. Areas of concentration include health care treatment and involuntary commitment, employment, government services, public accommodations, education, housing, and personal autonomy. Students will review the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Sec. 504), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Fair Housing Act Amendments. The course examines disability from a health justice and civil and human rights perspective. Students completing this course satisfy the Law and Poverty Requirement.
